International Students

Our international students have come from Brazil, Canada, China, Greece, Korea, Iceland, India, Jamaica, Japan, Peru and Taiwan. Over the years most American states have been represented including Alaska and Hawaii.

The following facts are provided so that you have a clear understanding of the investment of time, money and energy that you and your family can expect.

  • We have a two-year, full-time graduate program leading to the Master of Fine Arts degree in Visual Art.
Applicants must have the equivalent of graduation from an American high school and the equivalent of the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program is a four-year university level course of study in which 70% to 90% of the student's time is spent in studio work and the remainder in academics.
  • We require a portfolio of consistent and mature artwork. Up to 20 slides may be submitted. Images on CD may also be submitted.
  • Many first-year students receive partial tuition remission scholarships. Such scholarship awards may require the student to work as an assistant to an instructor, so excellent colloquial English and a knowledge of American art school procedures are preferred.
  • Foreign students are not eligible for the U. S. government loans by which most American students support themselves. Foreign students may be eligible for University sponsored loans contingent on an American co-signer.
  • The study of art at the graduate level requires a command of English sufficient for the discussion of contemporary issues in American and European art, theories of criticism and aesthetics. We expect the entering student to have prior knowledge of such concepts, as well as a background in art history. The minimum TOEFL score required by the University is 550 on the paper-based and 213 on the computer-based exam.
  • The deadline for Fall applications is January 17.
