The Henry L. and Natalie E. Freund Teaching FellowshipThrough a unique collaboration with the Saint Louis Art Museum, a distinguished contemporary artist is brought to campus as the Henry L.and Natalie E. Freund Teaching Fellow. The Freund Fellow is in residence for one month each semester interacting with graduate students in a formal classroom setting as well as through individual studio visits and group critques. During the spring semester, the Freund Fellow presents a solo exhibition and lecture at the Saint Louis Art Museum as part of the museum's Currents contemporary art series. The Freund Fellow for the 2004-05 Academic Year was Matthew Buckingham. Buckingham’s work utilizes film, photography, and sound recording, and is based in historical research. His work has been exhibited recently at the Dallas Museum of Art; The Museum of Modern Art, Vienna; and PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York, among others. He is a current recipient of a DAAD residency in Berlin, Germany. Matthew Buckingham’s Graduate Seminar was entitled “Unlearning St. Louis.” New work from Buckingham was exhibited in spring 2005 at the Saint Louis Art Museum as part of the Currents exhibition series. The Freund Fellow for the 2003-2004 Academic Year was Francis Cape , who “...builds mock cabinets and architectural structures that operate in the overlap between Pop and Minimalism.” Ken Johnson, New York Times, 9/21/01. Cape’s work was exhibited at the Saint Louis Art Museum as part of the Currents exhibition series. Past Freund Fellows include: Ellen Gallagher, painter; Jessica Bronson, Los Angeles-based video artist; Philip Robinson, painter and performer; and Michael Byron, painter. Island PressIsland Press, Washington University’s collaborative print workshop, specializes in the production of nontraditional prints created by nationally and internationally recognized artists. Graduate printmakers assist with all aspects of the Studio's operation. Recent guests include Nick Cave, Sue Coe, Annette Lemiux, Juane Quick-to See Smith, Juan Sanchez, Franco Mondini-Ruiz and Joyce Scott.
